A daily journal

One little story a day, and something good to add to your cart.

Every day I write a short, made-up story about an Amazon find that's worth a look. The stories are fiction; the products and links are real. Between stories there are printables from my Etsy shop.

Marnie vs. the Floss Drawer

Every bathroom has a drawer of good intentions. This is the story of one that finally got emptied.

Marnie's bathroom drawer held eleven flossers, four half-used tubes of the string kind, and one ambitious tool she had bought in a moment of optimism. She opened it every morning, sighed, and closed it again.

Her sister Dee, who has opinions about everything, put one on the counter at Thanksgiving planning weekend: a Waterpik Aquarius countertop water flosser. It had a reservoir, a handful of tips, and adjustable pressure settings. "Start on low," Dee said. "It's a faucet for your teeth. Respect it."

Marnie started on low. By day three she had stopped narrating it. By day ten the drawer was a normal drawer again, holding only the things that belong in a drawer, and she had moved her good intentions to the garage.

She did add one thing to the routine: a JBL Go 4 speaker on the shelf, because the morning is better with a podcast, and the bathroom is steamy. The Go 4 is waterproof and dustproof, so the shelf was no trouble at all. Dee called it "a lot of upgrades for one drawer." Marnie said, "It was a very full drawer."

Back in the real world: the Waterpik Aquarius is a countertop water flosser with a water reservoir and multiple pressure settings; the JBL Go 4 is a small portable Bluetooth speaker with an IP67 water and dust rating. Prices above were what I saw on Amazon on Oct 7 during Prime Big Deal Days and can change.

Gerald and the Great Crumb Reckoning

Priya swore she would never name a vacuum. Then the vacuum started running the house.

Priya had a rule: no naming appliances. Names meant feelings, and feelings meant she would one day apologize to a toaster. The rule lasted until a Tuesday in October, when she came home to find that the Shark AI Ultra robot vacuum her brother had talked her into had mapped the whole apartment, stayed out of the plant corner, and done the hallway twice, just to be sure.

"Gerald," she said to the empty living room. It was out before she could stop it.

By Friday Gerald had a schedule, and Priya had a new habit of saying "Gerald, you missed a spot" to a machine that had not, in fact, missed a spot. She started it from the kitchen by voice, which is where the Amazon Echo Show 5 came in. It sat by the fruit bowl, showed the weather and her calendar, and when she said "Alexa, ask Gerald to clean," a small chime answered and the floors began to clear themselves.

Her brother texted: Told you. Priya texted back a photo of Gerald parked neatly on his dock, and the single word Fine.

Back in the real world: the Shark AI Ultra is a robot vacuum that maps your rooms, and the Echo Show 5 is Amazon's compact smart display with Alexa. Check each Amazon page for the exact model and what is in the box.
